Initial Notes on Red Ops from Cal, Amanda and Roger

Red Ops

4/25/11
Phone Conversation - Amanda, Jason, Roger

Overview:
Red Opportunities, aka Red Ops, will be a collaborative initiative between CU and ICSD.
The major goal is to promote collaboration, communication and information exchange between the two organizations.
The first phase will be to make additions to the existing CU Outreach Portal which will allow for visitors to get to the ICSD materials efficiently.

Initial Work:
Part I: What activities, programs, and general collaborations are we engaged in and how do we organize that information so it can be found and used? = Outreach Portal
Part II: What else can we do? Improve communication? Have an idea? Can’t find what you need? Etc. Make use of existing options:
  • Special CU email mailbox, “RedOps” (“AskRedOps” ?) and Amanda would like to share ownership of the mailbox with Cal Walker, Jason, Roger. Cal might have primary responsibility for responding to the inquiries received here. Is this the right course of action?
  • FAQs - Formspring? <http://www.formspring.me>. We could also put an entery in the outreach portal that provides basic information about the ICSD-CU partnership, contact info and other FAQ-style information.
  • Twitter - info about upcoming events, Reminders, Did you Know? The account and password could be shared across ICSD and CU staff. Who would be the point person for broadcasting? Could multiple people share responsibility for this and still make it work? “Making it work” would be defined by a set level of tweet frequency: one per day, 10 per week, etc.

Considerations:
Succesion: as people retire, leave ICSD and Cornell how do data management and communications responsibilities get handed down?

Next Steps:
  • Establish a target “release” for RedOps.
  • Identify program and collaboration information before ICSD teachers leave for the summer. This is only critical on the ICSD-side as Amanda will have access to Cornell program staff over the summer.
  • Determine who will create content at ICSD. Will curriculum chairs create records for their content/grade areas? Consideration: curriculum chairs might always make their grade level counterpart a “program manager” to ensure all portal records can be accessed by at least 2 people at ICSD.
  • Determine who at ICSD will be responsible for verifying/publishing data in the portal (a mid-level administrator in terms of the portal’s hierarchy for admin access and control). A Cornell student could be involved in this process but will not be available for long-term maintenance. Amanda will be responsible for training the mid-level administrators and will provide ongoing guidance and support to those undertaking this responsibility.
  • Key ICSD staff will apply for Cornell NetIDs.
  • Does Cornell need to do anything to support or assist in NetID application? Consideration: this may have come up in Luvelle Brown’s meeting with Cornell’s CEO of CIT. Gary can advise.
  • Identify/hire student staff support at Cornell for work on the portal. If this isn’t possible, pursue alternatives ASAP.
  • Make changes to controlled vocabulary in the Outreach Portal to include ICSD in the geographic areas list, the audiences list (information for) and the subject list under the “Learning and Teaching: In School and Out” heading.
